Celibacy versus Abstinence

Prophet Katalina Scott.

Many people believe that celibacy and abstinence are the same and they are not. You may also try to make the connection that it does not matter what term is used because a person is not engaging in sexual acts but the terms do matter.

Celibacy is never engaging in sex or sexual acts in your lifetime. You may ask, why would someone do that? Some people are called to a life of singleness and in that they will never have sex or engage in sexual acts. These people know that this is the call on their lives and do not struggle to remain pure. These people usually do not have a sex drive and do not have urges to desire marriage or a partner.

Some people claim that they are called to a life of singleness but they engage in fornication. These people are not called to a celibate life and are most likely suffering from past relationship hurts and just need to heal. The best way to heal is through abstinence and some may also need to fast during that time to become whole.

Abstinence is not having sex or engaging in sexual acts of any kind until married. As an Heir in the Kingdom of God we are called to a life of purity which includes abstinence when not married. Abstinence also includes all sexual acts including oral and masturbation. I single these acts out because some people are looking for loopholes and there are not any loopholes when you accept your sonship in the Kingdom of God.

The reason I am making the distinction between celibacy and abstinence is because using the wrong term could delay what you want in your life. If you are praying for a spouse but you have declared celibacy over your life then that delays your prayer. If you, in fact desire marriage and you have declared celibacy over your life then you should denounce it and use the correct term of abstinence instead. Also understand that if you have a sex drive then you are not called to a life of singleness.
